As the weeks run away I am reminded that last week slipped past without a post. As an agent some of my collections are being shipped back to their owners and others are continuing to sell so life slips into a different pattern at work. I discovered a whole garage room full of samples that need a home so have decided it’s time for a spring clean out. The result is a sample sale in the showroom planned for 13-15 th April. Luckily I have my assistant the lovely Selina on hand to help me out and keep me calm.

At this time of year there are several Press Days to keep me on my toes. Yesterday was the launch of the new Ant-Ageing Beauty Bible in Arnotts followed by the Kilkenny Design Spring Summer fashion show that I gate crashed with my friend, stylist extraordinaire Cathy O’Connor. Today it’s the turn of Cos followed by afternoon tea at the British Ambassadors residence where some of the Queen’s dresses will be on show (she won’t miss a few) and to top it off model Faye Dinsmore’s Fashion Awards are on tonight in Dublin’s Mansion House. The great thing about blogging is that you can be as busy or not as you choose to be. There’s no pressure to write or do anything in fact. For me though it’s added an exciting dimension to my life. I have decided recently to monetise my site and now have two advertisements going onto it shortly. I had to think long and hard about that but I think I’ve come up with a code of ethics that doesn’t compromise my impartiality in any way. I need a new camera (or at least I want one) so this is my way of paying for it!

There are 74 Fashion Bloggers on the Irish Fashion Bloggers Facebook page and literally hundreds in the UK. When I started blogging a year and a half ago there was only a handful which just outlines the growth of the internet and the influence of the bloggers. If I was a boutique owner or a designer I would take the bloggers seriously and try to find ways of encouraging them to write pieces about their business. Competitions are one way of doing this, another is to remember to invite the bloggers to any in-store event or fashion show that you are involved in. Blogs remain on the web forever, print ends up in a dustbin, blogs engage with the readers and form relationships with potential customers, print does neither. Blogs can be on the internet within minutes of an event.

Today I was in Grafton Street at lunch time with my camera. A BT2 PR event took place and I had the photographs and a video on my blog less than an hour later. The press who were there with their heavy hitting cameras will have their pictures in the papers (if they are lucky) tomorrow. Take Blogging seriously and if you are brave enough consider starting your own. It really is easy but it does become addictive if you are any way like me!

Irish Model Faye Dinsmore has single handedly organised an Irish Fashion Awards Ceremony which is taking place in the Mansion House on 31^st March. With Karen Millen and Model agency IMG on board as well as The Irish Times perhaps this will be an Irish Fashion night to remember. Have a fashionable week ahead….

An honest appraisal of where we are all at is most important as we review the selling and how things are ticking along in the showroom. To say that the past few weeks have been challenging is a bit of an understatement as election fever and depression gripped the nation and buyers who had nerves shattered either froze or ducked for cover. The fact that I sell lots of different collections was a huge factor in bringing the buyers in and writing orders. Falke, Jaeger and Yummie Tummie were selling well and the surprise new collection is Solsani which is from Germany and designed by the original Nicowa designers. It has really sold well and for a collection having its first outing in Ireland I’m very hopeful for it. One thing I have noticed that many of the buyers are telling me and that is that they want quality products which offer good value for money, nothing cheap and nasty!

The Futura fair was on in the RDS and was squashed into a small space because a certain election count was also taking place in the same venue! It was by all accounts a miserable affair. Just read a blow by blow account on the Lady Umbrella.com website for a true and honest diary of their experience of the show and it doesn’t make for happy endings. I’m so happy to be in cosy showroom in Dublin working away and hoping that a new government can at least give people hope and encouragement. For the future of the Independent retailer in Ireland who are working harder than ever depends upon it.

Irish Designer Flying the Flag for Ireland in Norway

IRISH FASHION DESIGNER GUEST JUDGE ON NORWAYS TOP MODEL!

ONE of the country’s top fashion designers is to be featured as a judge on Norway’s Top Model TV Programme, providing a great showcase for the best of Irish design.
Jennifer Rothwell was chosen to judge a heat of the TV reality show which was held in Dublin last July and which will be broadcast in Norway to an audience of 220,000 on March 7th. Thousands more will see the programme online at http://www.tv3play.no/ under Top Model as soon as it has been broadcasted.
The programme follows the same format as the extremely popular America’s Next Top Model. When the crew was in Dublin, the ten models performed on the catwalk in front of Jennifer Rothwell, wearing her designs. Jennifer then choose the winner and the loser of the competition. The winner got to keep a Jennifer Rothwell dress.
According to Jennifer, the broadcasting of the programme on Norway’s TV3 to such a huge audience is a great opportunity to bring her designs to another market. “It’s also a great opportunity to showcase Ireland as an urban fashion hub.” she said.
A Crafts Council of Ireland (CCoI) peer mentor, Jennifer said it was fitting that the programme is being broadcast this year given that 2011 has been designated Year of Craft celebrating the 40th anniversary of the CCoI.
Failte Ireland, in conjunction with Tourism Ireland, pitched against several other European cities to have the episode filmed in Dublin. “It was a huge coup for Dublin and Ireland to have won this pitch” said Jennifer.
Born in New York and raised in Dublin, Jennifer Rothwell graduated with honours from the National College of Art and Design in 1995. After graduation Jennifer went to New York where she got huge experience in the fashion industry working for high profile companies as Calvin Klein, Norma Kamali, Katayone Adeli and Yigal Azrouel at director level.

Jennifer returned to Ireland in 2005 and later launched her own label, Jennifer Rothwell. Just seven months after the launch the Jennifer Rothwell label won the "Brown Thomas Designer Mentor Programme Award” at Dublin Fashion Week in 2007. In January 2010 Jennifer won a highly commended New Product Award at the Showcase Expo and she showcased at the Irish Pavilion at Shanghai World Expo last year.

She was appointed a peer mentor for the Crafts Council of Ireland in June 2010 and plans to expane her brand into Scandanavia, the US and Asia.

I was double jobbing as both Fashion agent and blogger over the past few days at the Pure Fashion Fair in London. Set over three days and spanning young fashion which was held at Earls court and Women’s Wear, Accessories and Shoes at Olympia. A shuttle bus was on hand to go between the venues, not an ideal solution as one venue would be far preferable. My Press pass gave me access to the Press Lounge which in reality gave me a place to leave my coat and bags and grab a cup of coffee. Exhibitions are a great place to network, meet retailers, other agents and to generally get a feel for the market. Both Agents and buyers are always searching for something new, something to get an edge or an exclusive product and these shows are our hunting grounds. As an agent I was working on both the Wizard Jeans and Martine Wester jewellery stands. Running from one stand to another as customers from Ireland popped on gave me plenty of exercise. There was a definite increase of Irish buyers to this show from last season and while there seemed to be a lot of people looking, my personal feeling is that business was down in general. The UK market, I think is starting to feel the pinch whilst we in Ireland have been feeling the chill for some time.

Irish companies I passed frequently were Ingenue led by the Chica girls selling their value dress range and doing very brisk business and Susannagh Grogan who had a good first show with her stunning scarves after a nervous early start and I know she was very pleased with business by the finish. Many of the Irish buyers come to Pure for one day only and tie the visit in with other buying in the London showrooms. Sunday is traditionally a day for the Independents as they don’t have to take time off the shop floor. Monday sees the store buyers doing the rounds and I did spot Lisa Stanley from Arnotts and Geraldine Waldron from Clerys. Other Irish Agent friends were generally happy with the show. I opened new accounts for both Martine Wester and Wizard which was a positive result for me. Taking orders is one aspect of the business and an important part of the business is meeting other agents from different countries who are selling the same collections as well as management and staff who for the rest of the year are only voices on the end of the phone.

Zandra Rhodes was showing her collection and I managed a quick word with both her and the Accessory and Shoe organiser, actress Vicky Ogden. Both women arrived in a whirlwind of colour and high heels down the corridor. I grabbed my camera and ran after them. They were both happy to pose for me. Zandra

Rhodes who is now in her 70’s has kept her iconic pink hair and flamboyant theatrical style which suits her just as well now as it did when she started out. I blame her for a short spell in the 70’s when I copied her blue eye shadow. Zandra, I see, is still wearing hers whilst I on the other hand have never worn it again!

A citizen of both Ireland and Colombia, Victoria was born in Bogotá and educated in the United States. After graduating from college, she moved to Rome, Italy and resided there from 1986 to 1995. She freelanced in the Italian film industry as a wardrobe design consultant and worked in the fashion industry in marketing. During this period, Victoria collaborated with Monica di Bei Schifano (wife of the Pop Art icon, Mario Schifano) on the design and marketing of a signature line of bijoux and eclectic jewellery.

In 1995, she moved to Ireland with her husband, an American screenwriter. In her early work, she was fascinated by the Celtic motifs and incorporated them into her line. One of these pieces was commissioned for the Broadway opening of Riverdance.

In Ireland, Victoria’s line is carried by a variety of exclusive boutiques in various parts of the country, north and south. She also sells to selective outlets in Southern California. In the past, the fashion magazine Irish Tattler included her in a keynote article on new designers; she has appeared twice on the TV program Nationwide as a featured artist and has won the South Tipperary Entrepreneurial Award for Best Business Growth for the year 2006.

Victoria currently lives on Clew Bay in County Mayo and future plans include expanding my line into selective European and US markets with an ancillary design and supply base in Cartagena, Colombia where she plans to open a Fair Trade studio.

SIGHT LINES.......

Sight lines are what are used to direct a person’s eye. So when a customer enters your store what are your sight lines? The most effective way to maximise impact is to have a focal point at the end of this sight line. For example there is a point in your store that has some interesting display or some image or artwork. The sight line is then measured also by what you achieve with the rest of the shop fittings on their way there!!

Space management is also key to happy shoppers, this is where you draw your customers around your store and guide them were you want them to go, it’s all in the way you place your fittings and fixtures how you merchandise them, there should be a flow in your store and if there is a good flow people will travel to all corners of your shop. Passing by all the products you are showing them and really engaging in your store and your brand.

In a store there are four different types of space:

1. Prime Space

These are your high flow areas, with high visibility. The fronts of fixtures for example.

2. Secondary Space

These are medium commercial value, are used for areas of higher volume lines.

3. Discovery Space

These are the areas which are hard to see, you need to discover them. Also known as blind spots.

4. Service Point

These are your till areas and fitting rooms, usually lots of volume but after the desions have been made. These areas can make or break a sale.

All of these areas should be broken down into a floor map this way you can see were to add sight lines or focal points and were best they will work for you. For more info on floor maps you can email me at Rowena@visualsense.ie

Music can have a huge effect on customers and their behaviour in your store!

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?

Music has a tendency to put customers at ease thus encouraging them to spend more time in a retail environment. There for the longer they remain in your shop the more likely they are to purchase something, also this is the same with scents, Vanilla works very well in fashion stores. Scent machines are also a huge part of retail.

SO WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC SHOULD I PLAY?

The style and temp of music you provide does contribute to the overall image of your retail store. Just as it is important to have attractive display fixtures, window displays and appropriate lighting, music too can be used to create a pleasant and appealing ambiance for your customers.

Larger retailers spend time and money developing music playlists, So the next time you are out shopping, listen to the music, the ones who are spending the time and money on these playlists, Are the ones who will probably be playing lyric less music and most certainly will not be playing any popular pop.

So the best advice is to leave that favourite CD you own at home. (We all have them, mine is Rihanna and I have it in the carJ) and only think from a selling point and research ideas for playlists. Never leave long gaps were no music is playing, and try not to turn your store into a disco.

And as for the radio, No one wants to hear the news when they are shopping.

I had a terrible nightmare last night which I thought I would share with you. I was in my showroom and had two customers at the same time (this is something that becomes inevitable with Irish timekeeping habits!) and is something I dislike, as each customer really needs and deserves my undivided attention. I was trying to convince one of them to buy Falke tights and I was getting quite het up when they wouldn’t take notice of my brilliant message. Into the showroom walked about thirty members of my family including those I don’t get on with, as well as three strange French men!! It was a total nightmare as I was very obviously out of control and losing the customers.

That nightmare illustrates exactly where I am at the moment. It’s always the same at this time of year. Preparing for the beginning of the season is like preparing for a marathon. The build-up is intense and demands a huge amount of work and lots of perseverance.

I spent yesterday in London going through the two Jaeger ranges on their way in, Boutique by Jaeger and Jaeger London. There is always the worry before I see a new collection that it is going to be awful luckily they didn’t disappoint, each of them with great strengths and a completely different theme and customer. I know that Jaeger are already hugely successful in Ireland so I am hoping to build up the Independent Boutique trade so that women will be able to buy those gorgeous coats, knits and dresses in their local Boutiques.

Making appointments is on my ‘must do’ list at the start of every day and my pet hate. Anyway time to get back to the phone. Have a fashionable week ahead….

Seasonal Events.....Valentine’s Day.

Seasonal events can often be hard to portray in a boutique. Take Valentine’s Day for example I often get asked do I need to make a window for this?

Making a window or promotion all depends on if you feel the effort you put in will add any sales to your till. So if you hang three hearts in your window, will this make an impact and make people want to buy or will it go unnoticed? Many times I feel it’s best to either do something OTT and use it as a marketing idea or just let it pass on by.

Some ideas could be:

1. Use the window to promote a local wedding!

2. Prepare an event to take place in the store for Valentine’s Day!

3. Do something for all the single ladies out there!

Men are meant to buy us ladies a gift for Valentine’s Day and making it easy for them when they (or if they) dare to enter a ladies boutique is key to selling. After working in the men’s area for some years we constantly found straight lines in our displays with no frills and VERY large price signs worked best. We would always also never have any large displays near the offer area and keep it to a location near the door.

I often see stores make a red section somewhere in their store, by adding all the clothing that fits in this category into one wall area or fitting, the trouble here is so many retailers do this that it can become over kill. I would say try something subtle and keep it really clean and simple maybe just some dinner date ideas and if you can add something as a free bonus if they buy one of these ideas even better.

Over the next few months we will have lots of small events such as ST Patrick’s Day, Easter and so on, my advice is unless it relates to your business then leave the frills to the supermarkets J

I have had a mad week so far, as the ranges continue to arrive in and the appointment book fills up I am reminded of a person who is moving home. As it happens I’m in the middle of that too. It’s simple incredible how much stuff I have accumulated in the past years. I must have filled about ten large black sacks for either recycling or the tip at this stage. I’m like a demented woman, packing and throwing simultaneously and usually at midnight!

I bumped into the always smiling Ruth Ni Lionsagh today whilst running out for an overdue ‘coffee to go’ Ruth is the owner of Om Diva who has recently relocated to Drury Street from their old home in the Georges Arcade. ( I will be going in with my camera tomorrow to take a look around and will post a piece on my blog about it). In five minutes we had injected each other with positive business vibes. I am buzzing with a full diary and fabulous ranges to sell. Ruth is buzzing with her new venture which includes a ‘Sip and Stitch’ class and a space for emerging new designers. This sits alongside her traditional boutique which is thriving in its own niche area. The reason I tell you this is because there is nothing like ‘positivity’ to make you feel good and act accordingly. My prescription for this year is to make sure you find people who emit those ‘positive vibes’ and make sure you get your regular fill of them!

Now in her seventh season, Olivia Rubin launched her first womenswear line after graduating from the world-renowned Central Saint Martins College in London. Her final collection was chosen for the prestigious press show and won immediate attention from the press who cited her printed designs as one of the ‘standout collections.’

The Harris Agencies Showroom looks like a bomb hit it. It’s like moving house twice a year. Old samples out, new ones in (if only it were that simple). It’s not just the samples, it’s the accompanying paperwork, posters, price lists and POS material. Replicate this over several ranges and if we are not organised we are talking true mayhem! As well as all the collections arriving there are range meetings to attend, three in London this month already and appointments to be made.

It’s always exciting opening the new boxes of clothes. The Muubaa came in during the week and is just gorgeous. I’m really looking forward to taking orders on this collection. Falke is also in which is a major operation since there are hundreds of samples, each one has to be listed, priced and looked at. One job that is most important is a run through in detail of every piece in every collection.

I’m sure I’ve said it before but there is one aspect of this work that I don’t like and it’s making appointments by phone. I could kiss my customers who do it all by email, it makes life so much easier. I love a full diary and I’m glad to say it’s filling up nicely. In the meantime I’m at home now and will be working on answering emails, blogging and making lists for tomorrow late into the night. Tomorrow is another day…Have a fashionable week ahead….

The holiday season is over, and spring inventory is arriving. How can you simultaneously achieve the following goals?

Planning is once again, one of the most important elements of a successful season. I recently visited a store over Christmas, and on my second visit I noticed that the sale stock was still in the same place. On my third venture out I was walking past and decided to pop in again and saw it was still same layout! I got chatting with the staff and I was told “We don’t have time for merchandising right now and at least this way customer will know where the sale is.”

My response was to tell them, People see it once, then twice and by the third time they are bored. Not making time for merchandising is not making time to maximize sales! I don’t know a single retailer that would say they don’t want to drive sales. MORE

Here are a few ideas:

Make a floor map, think outside the box, think logical, think of your customers and think what I want to achieve for this season.

Categorize your clearance merchandise!!!!!!!! This is the best way to sell off the rest.

Analyze where you will place clearance product vs. full-priced product.

What new ideas can you bring to the floor and window layouts?

Can you move the fittings around?? (NEVER HAVE A STALE FLOOR)

Should you try to create some new focus points in your store?

Re think your space management, are your fittings really working.

A new marketing campaign is the best way to start the year.

2011 will see a new wave of retail; the concepts are much fresher and cleaner than the traditional “Lifestyle stores” the new movement will include simple store layouts, unique marketing campaigns, and stores that offer a completely new shopping experience to the current market!
