Swap in the City

After the huge success of the inaugural event, Swap in the City returns to the Radisson Hotel Galway on Thursday 8th October. It is the “Guilt Free, Ethical & Stylish way to update your wardrobe”, so come along, bring your friends, and have a fantastic night on a budget! Tickets for the stylish fashion affair are only 10 euro, and after that “Your Clothes become your Currency”. In addition to the Swap element, Irishboutiques.com will be there with a host of top boutiques selling some fabulous designer labels for a fraction of high street prices. Also, i102-104's Barbara NicDhonnacha will be broadcasting her “Ar Eileamh” Chart Show live from the event! Swap in the City was first introduced to the West of Ireland in January 2009 by Galway Simon Community, and after the phenomenal success of their last event, they have decided to make it bigger and better. Barry McCann, Community fundraiser for Galway Simon Community and organiser of the event, said “we believe that the reason for the success of such an event is because of it’s relativity to the current economic climate. People are looking for bargains everywhere they go, and they want to feel that they get value for money from events and merchandise.” Barry also commented on how the swap process works; “this is a unique opportunity for women to create their very own 'fashion currency' by swapping their unworn or unwanted pieces from their wardrobes. Swapping couldn't be easier, but to avoid any confusion, we have put together a very simple 3-step process”. STEP 1: Purchase a Ticket for Swap in the City online at http://www.galwaysimon.ie/ or by calling 091-589415. Tickets cost €10.STEP 2: Exchange your unworn or unwanted clothing, shoes, bags, jewellery or accessories for Swap Tokens. This can be done at the Radisson Hotel on Wednesday 7th October between 8am – 7pm or on Thursday 8th October between 12pm - 3pm. Those who deposit items on Wednesday will receive an extra free token.STEP 3: These tokens can then be used to “purchase” any other item in the Swap Department on the night of the event. Your tokens will get you clothes, shoes, bags or accessories - any item that catches your eye! All clothing must be clean, freshly pressed and in pristine condition. Items should be on hangers where possible. Unfortunately should any items not meet these quality requirements, they may not be accepted on the night. Doors open 7.30pm. For further information call Barry on 091 589415. All proceeds to Galway Simon Community. For further info contact Barry McCann on 087 4156201 or email fundraising@galwaysimon.ie

Accessorize!!

Many women have a longstanding fear of accessorising. Well, maybe fear is too strong a word. It is more like they worry about overdoing it or feel self-conscious and unsure about their choices. As a result, they are slow to add accessories to their wardrobe. While this is certainly a valid choice, they often feel like they are missing out on a great way to expand their wardrobe and jazz things up a bit. A watch, simple diamond earrings, and of course, a handbag are about as far as they go. Even these, however, are generally understated. There is a whole world out there to explore, but they find the sheer volume of choices overwhelming. It is often a case of never having learned how to accessorise. When they feel the urge to experiment and wear a piece of jewellery, they feel uncomfortable or too obvious and take it off. Sound familiar? Despite their discomfort, they remain intrigued by the effect it can have and long to add that kind of statement to their wardrobe. But how, they wonder? When it comes to accessorising, keep two things in mind:
Accessories are powerful. They are usually beautiful, bright, sparkly or simply unusual, and, as a result, they draw attention.
There is more to accessories than jewellery and scarves. Eyeglasses are an accessory. So are brightly coloured fingernails. Patterned or coloured socks or stockings fall into this category, as do hair clips, scrunchies, and sometimes the buttons on an outfit. Even highlighted hair is an accessory.
Accessories can enhance an outfit or be distracting. Finding things that blend with the mood, texture, colour scheme, and personality of what you are wearing is key. If you are new to the art of accessorising, use these tips to get started:
Ease into it. Although, as a novice to the world of accessorising, I suspect there is little chance that you’ll go crazy and wear a necklace, earrings, bracelet, pin, etc. all at one time (even if they match!), it is best to choose a single piece that delights you.
Don’t accessorise in the dark. Have you ever stopped at a jewellery counter with every intention of purchasing something only to be frustrated? This is a result of shopping blind, so to speak. It is difficult to accessorise something you cannot see. So, the next time you feel the impulse to shop for accessories, wear the outfit you want to accessorise or if it is for a special occasion bring it with you.. That way you will be able to tell if the necklace works within the neckline of your jacket, or the teal is really the same teal as your sihirt, for instance.
Follow the Pattern. If the outfit has geometric designs on it, look for earrings with angular lines. If your outfit has soft swirls or flowers, pick up on those features and colours in the necklace you choose. This will complement the outfit and create harmony.
Weigh Your Options. Winter weight fabrics, colours and textures are often heavier than those worn in the summer. Maintain a similar feel so that your summer clothes don’t look overwhelmed and your winter choices are not lost.
Silver vs. Gold. Usually it is best (although there are exceptions) to wear all gold or silver. If, for example, the buttons on your jacket are gold, wear gold. If the stitching has a silver sheen to it, wear silver. This creates a harmonious look.
Accessories are fun. They add beauty and personality to an outfit. I guarantee that once you’ve tried it you will be hooked for life!

Belfast Fashion Week!!

West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK Continues Fifth Birthday Celebrations with a Move to City Hall!

West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK, Ireland’s multi-award-winning fashion event, continues its fifth year celebrations with a move to the chic surroundings of Belfast City Hall for this Autumn.
Now an established date on every fashionista’s calendar, this season’s events will be part of Belfast City Council's packed programme of activities celebrating the reopening of the iconic building; and the FASHIONWEEK events commence with a spectacular ‘Fashion Through the Decades’ showcase on 29 October. This will be followed by nightly catwalk shows, master classes, exciting exhibitions and the coolest, freshest fashion both on and off the catwalk, making the popular event bigger and better again this season. As usual, there will be showcases from the very best of the high street as well as the hottest local designers and chic boutiques.
In addition to the shows, fashion photographer Khara Pringle will also showcase her ‘Uniform of Fashion’ photography exhibition which includes beautiful and iconic images of TV personalities such as Zoe Salmon, actor James Nesbitt, singer Sharon Corr, Miss Northern Ireland Cherie Gardiner and Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody.
Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Naomi Long, welcomed the concept of a 'City Hall for All' and urged the public to support the packed programme of events planned. "We are delighted that West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK will be able to showcase the best of what our city has to offer in the wonderful surroundings of City Hall," she said.
"Given Belfast's proud association with the linen and textiles industry, it is fitting that we celebrate our fashion heritage and the creativity that will ensure success in the future too".
To celebrate the move, local dress designer and independent retailer Lizzie Agnew created a Victorian crinoline dress inspired by the Baroque dome. She said: “I’ve based the skirt of the dress on the distinctive copper dome with Verdis Gris shot silk cut into panels to echo the architecture. And for the top of the dress I have recreated the cupola using a dark grey, tight fitting, boned bodice. A scalloped ruffle at the edge with a ‘Toby’ frill at the waist reflects the carved stonework, so overall, the tight corseted waist with highly structured separate dome skirt reflects both the fashion at the time as well as this very solid, though delicately detailed, building.
The event is once again sponsored by the fashionista’s favourite West Coast Cooler, which is also introducing a new colour trend for the season, West Coast Cooler Rose, and the popular new drink will be served as a refreshing accessory to the glamour at every catwalk show. Brand Manager Karen Anderson said: “West Coast Cooler provides a chic and refreshing accessory to the style on and off the catwalks this season and it matches perfectly with the ethos of FASHIONWEEK. We’re delighted to be involved in bringing the freshest trends and hottest looks to the shows, as well as allowing the FASHIONWEEK audiences to sample the new autumn essential - West Coast Cooler Rose. ”
For further information on show schedules, tickets, links to participant retailers and designers as well as the season’s hottest trends, log on to http://www.belfastfashionweek.com/. For show tickets, call the Welcome Centre Box Office on 028 9024 6609
