floss and cupcakes.

Designer Focus: Heidi Higgins

_Heidi Higgins launches SS10 collection
and the label’s new studio / boutique destination_

The excitement that greeted the debut collection of dynamic young designer
Heidi Higgins means that expectations for her second collection are intense.

Be assured – the outlook for this Spring / Summer is splendid.

The air of anticipation lifts at last Friday March 5th when Heidi’s shining
new collection is officially revealed at the proud opening of her very own
maison couture at No. 27 Church Street, Portlaoise. This state-of-the-art,
open-plan store and studio will house the full collection and will enable
the designer to work closely with clients on custom orders; while individual
pieces  will, of course, be available at selected boutiques across the
country.

Heidi caught the eye of top fashion editors and Ireland’s shrewdest style
bloggers grace of a timeless first collection that, for a covetous Irish
Independent, evoked the Hepburn-esque charm of sophisticated starlet Carey
Mulligan in hit film An Education.

A new season – and with a fashion landscape that’s still firmly fixated on
film, Heidi is sure to build a stellar reputation with a Spring/Summer
collection that gleams with all the cool perfection of January Jones (Mad
Men’s Betty Draper) and pops with the posh poise of one Felicity Jones (the
beautiful English star of Ricky Gervais feature film Cemetery Junction and
darling of Vanity Fair magazine). With striking colours that put the wearer
centre stage, the aesthetic is prim yet bold; deluxe yet practical. The
resplendent palette encompasses Jade, Blackberry Purple, Hot Pink, Sassy,
Lemon and Ocean Blue – an underwater garden of spectacular shades.

Featuring  lively  original prints that speak to the current trend for
playful, optimistic pattern, the shapes swish from lush drapes to natty
folds  and  nipped  waists;  from delicately swooping necklines to the
straightest cuts and firmest pleats.

Key pieces for the season include the Adele Dress and Amelia Jacket, in
finest  wool crèpe. These exquisitely tailored matching pieces come in
turquoise or pink – the classic shapes given a delightful twist with a
pretty polka print insert on the jacket sleeves and curling coyly along the
neckline.

Elsewhere, the Esme dress picks up on the current fascination for bows, as
seen at the recent Paris Fashion Week for Chanel. It also features clever
darting and side-seam zip.

The  intricate  print  of  the  Tess dress tells tales that recall the
Escher-like digital designs of Riccardo Tisci for this season’s Givenchy;
while Tess’s innovative textured fabric sculpts desirably round the figure
and holds its shape off the shoulder.

Lara, in Taffeta lume, is this season’s classic little black dress. The
detail  is what defines it – the lush ivory silk organza collar detail
ensures that Lara is the epitome of elegance. In a charming twist on the
theme, Heidi has also created an Indigo Navy and Strawberry version.

This season sees a return of the luxurious, top-quality silk jersey fabrics
that have made Heidi a designer whose work begs to be touched as well as
seen. Key jersey pieces for Spring/Summer are the lovely Lulu dress (which
mixes silk satin in a gloriously draped, flowing design), the Kelly wrap
dress and the Ellen dress (which pairs a rippling silk satin top draped from
the empire line into a gorgeous jersey skirt).

One of the most enjoyably artful pieces for the season is the ingeniously
detailed Izzy dress, a silk crèpe de chine design that comes in ocean blue
with polka dot facing print, or pink with black facing. Short and sweet –
this one is _perfect for flirting_

I got back from London Fashion Week yesterday several invitations later I am
just catching up here at home.  The Jaeger London show was fantastic as was
John Rocha’s, both were true to their core values.  Jaeger concentrating on
cut, tailoring and city style with John Rocha showing his amazing use of
texture and shape in an amazing neutral but never boring palette.

I  was  double  jobbing  (blogging  and  agent) and ended up following
photographers. At one point I took some pictures of a woman and then turned
to the person beside me and asked ‘Who’s that’? To which the reply in a very
condescending tone came back ‘It’s Erin O’Connor, don’t you know who she
is?’  To which I mumbled something about my eyesight not being too good.  My
theory is, shoot first and ask questions later.

I bumped into fashion journalists  Annmarie O’Connor and Deirdre Mc Quillan
and it’s great to catch up and share our (fashion) thoughts.  It’s amazing
that often the most interesting and important discussions and meetings take
place in airport lounges and Fashion exhibitions!

One  feature of the Show was a touching RIP wall to Alexander Mc Queen
covered in very moving tribute notes.  A sad reminder that life is precious
and a great talent is lost to the world of fashion.

I’m back in the showroom now buzzing with enthusiasm and excited about
business with a renewed vigour.  The customers are coming in , I’m selling
and loving catching up with all of them.  The Business of Fashion is moving
on and I’m having one of those unusually positive and enthusiastic days
where I’m really happy to be part of it.

Have a really good week…….

true master of his art, McQueen was honoured with a remembrance wall in the

Leblas is a fine jewellery boutique that fuses together traditional
techniques with modern design and sustainable practices. Winner of Coutts
New Jeweller Award 2009, Leblas was founded by Clare Winfield and award
winning jewellery designer Arabel Lebrusan.

The Leblas jewellery collections range from unique contemporary designs to
classic and inspirational pieces, made from 100% recycled silver, 18k gold,
and platinum, by artisans in Spain. Its diamond collections, including
wedding, engagement and commitment pieces, are made entirely from
conflict-free traceable Canadian diamonds and precious stones. Leblas
designs statement necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings and redefines the
concept of “classic” by beautifully crafting modern designs for today’s
jewellery fashionistas.

Key contemporary jewellery pieces include: the Sequin ring adorned with
diamonds, Black Silver Filigree necklace, and Harlequin pendant encrusted
with semi-precious gem. Each handcrafted design demonstrates a mix of
modernity with timelessness, keeping in mind the importance of delicate yet
daring feminine appeal.

Its bespoke service allows customers to sit down with the designer and let
their imaginations run free with designs straight from their dreams. The sky
is the limit with these made-to-order gems, from tiaras to one-of-a-kind
statement pieces, Leblas designs jewellery to match every customer’s taste.

Leblas also acts as a stockist to other designer jewellers including: SHO,
Missoma, and Francesca Sibylla Augusta. It carries ethically hand knitted
scarves from Lily Cole’s “The North Circular”, and bags from the eccentric
“Lie down I think I love you” brand.

In order to strengthen its relationships with current and potential clients,
Leblas makes a continuous effort in creating intimate events, where
customers can personally come in to mingle and shop, as well as offering
personal shopping, jewellery re-design, and jewellery cleaning services. All
collections can be purchased in-store and from the website

[7]FiFi Belle
[8]
This season sees elegant footwear brand FiFi Belle launch its Spring/Summer
collection. Drawing on her own struggle to find larger sizes, FiFi Belle’s
founder, Aoife, launched the collection in 2008 to address the gap in the
market. Each pair is beautifully hand-crafted using the finest leather to
create glamorous pieces irrespective of size.

    8. http://www.fifibelle.com

FiFi Belle, which derives its name from the French for ‘beautiful’, caters
for feminine feet ranging from 6-11. Studies found that those with larger or
wider sized feet were not served well by mass market production. So whether
it’s gorgeous, flat ballet pumps you are after or sophisticated heels, FiFi
Belle ensures style without compromising comfort.
With striking lace shoes and gorgeous lacing & ladylike details, FiFi Belle
is the perfect wardrobe update!

This season’s must have, ‘Block Colours’, also feature in the collection,
allowing the wearer to easily reinstate minimalist elegance with an edge.
Aoife, the founder of FiFi Belle says “The most rewarding part of my
business is the satisfaction I bring to my customers who thought they would
never get to wear fashionable shoes due to the size of their feet”. Shoes
are splashed with exquisite detail, using Swarovski diamonds and shocking
pink soles, making sure your feet grab attention for the all the right
reasons.

FiFi Belle takes pride in giving women with larger feet the option of chic
footwear and this season’s collection is the brand’s best yet. Now there is
no excuse to follow the other 88% of women who wear the wrong size, with an
endless choice of smart, sophisticated, yet stylish shoes, having larger
than average feet has never been so ‘in’!

Top International Model Jodie Kidd is the latest celebrity to be spotted
wearing FiFi Belle at this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

I’m not sure if I don’t need a lot of sleep or I just don’t get enough of
it.  Whatever the answer it’s a good job because at the moment I’m lucky if
I get to bed before one in the morning. Last Friday I was between Blogging,
Tweeting, Facebooking, selling, organising Charity events oh and family when
I  got a call from RTE asking me if I would come in on Tuesday morning
(early)  to  do a piece on…….Nylons or to be more up to date, hosiery.
Without thinking I of course said yes, that’s going to be easy peasy, after
all it’s one of the things I sell and know well.

It turned out to be the most challenging subjects in terms of research.
Every time I did a Google search and entered in either tights, stay-ups or
stockings I quickly found myself either in Nora Batty or Dita Von Teese
territory and more besides!  At one stage my partner glanced over towards
the computer and asked what exactly I was doing as I was quickly exiting yet
another porn site.

I started contributing on Ryan Tubridy’s radio programme over a year ago
when I did a piece on Music Therapy following my daughters accident and
subsequent rehabilitation in the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun
Laoire.  On the way out the producer said  ‘that went great, can you talk
about  anything else’?  To which I replied  ‘Well, If you ask me about
anything to do with fashion?’.  I didn’t think about it until a couple of
months later when I got a call to go in.  Today was, I think, my sixth or
seventh time.

So,  last  night  following  the  live Bloggers Conference Stream from
Independent Fashion Bloggers in New York with Susie Bubble, Bryanboy and
Tavi amongst the panel, I got down to the research work involved in hosiery
and finally got to sleep around two.  I was in RTE bright and early.  The
piece  went fine and much to Ryan Tubridy’s and the Producers surprise
literally hundreds of emails and texts poured in on the subject of Hosiery.
It seems everyone has an opinion…….

Have a great week ahead..

Beauty Treatment for Fashionistas

The fashion industry is a hectic one. Whether you are on your feet all day
attending  to  customers in your boutique or keeping appointment after
appointment with distributors and stylists, your feet feel the strain even
in the most fabulous of shoes! So if you’ve been hiding your tootsies in
winter boots or just fancy some much needed TLC then why not treat them to a
spa treatment with a difference at Margarita Beauty Salon in Dublin’s Sutton
Cross.

With celebrity fans including popstress Little Boots lining up to try this
hot new beauty trend, exfoliation and pedicures have taken a fishy twist
with Ireland’s first Fish Pedicure arriving  just in time for sandal season!

Originating  in the pools of a hot spring near Kangal, a small town in
Turkey, the Fish Pedicure involves placing feet in a warm water pool of
Garra  Rufa  fish  or Doctor Fish, as they are commonly known. The 125
specially selected fish begin to investigate, seeking out and removing dead
skin, bacteria and calluses while rejuvenating healthy skin. As the fish
have no teeth they act as a stimulating and relaxing massage running their
little  suction  cup  mouths  across the feet and toes. The only way to
understand this unique and effective treatment comes from experience, so
what are you waiting for!

Nina Divito is an established artist and designer. She launches her first
footwear collection this Fall, for sale to the public in Spring & Summer
   2010.

Nina Divito studied Footwear Design at Cordwainer’s College ( London College
of Fashion ) and Model Making for Design and Media at the Arts Institute,
   Bournemouth.

Following a period working in film & television and as a design assistant to
an established footwear designer Nina  began a successful and continuing
career as an artist. Her paintings – solely of shoes ! – are avidly sought
out by collectors and her exhibitions receive stalwart praise in the media
   (newspapers, magazines and tv).

Now the passion, independence and appeal   of her art collection has been
transferred, through the medium of her design experience and several months
of research and development , into an inaugural collection comprising 11
shoe styles offering a total of 22 colour and fabric options using exquisite
nappa leathers, luxurious soft suedes, seductive silk satins, often combined
with delicate trims of organza and ribbon. The palette of rich pearly
pastels accentuates the overall femininity of the collection.

The collection, designed in Ireland, is developed for the international
luxury market and will be made in one of Italy’s most renowned footwear
factories using the age old techniques of the Venetian Shoemakers Guild.

Nina Divito does not only design and paint shoes – she captures a confident
femininity, a playful sexuality, an assertive individuality and an acute
awareness of contemporary lifestyle. She does so with a dramatic use of
colour & materials and an engaging sense of proportion.

The subtlety and quality of the presentation and packaging adds to the
overall sense of refinement of a collection whose independence of spirit
makes it  instantly collectible rather than transitory or faddish in
   design..

The Nina Divito Collection will be sold on a strictly limited distribution
basis through selected stores. Buyers will be seen by private appointment
   only.

_Katharine Bird Boutique in Charity Fashion Show_

Katharine Bird took part in a fashion show in aid of Trinity Hospice last
Tuesday night (2/2/10). Arranged by local mums and held at a spectacular
Clapham home, the catwalk show featured outfits from a number of local
boutiques along with some highlights from the new Amanda Wakeley collection.
Dresses from Libelula, Valentino Red and InWear caught the eye along with an
ensemble from Joseph and Day Birger & Mikkelsen which featured the soon to
be ubiquitous ‘boyfriend jacket’. The evening was dedicated to local child
Sidney Banks with all the money raised going to Trinity Hospice. We’d like
to thank Julie for suggesting our involvement and Andrea Muirhead for making
sure our clothes looked so lovely. Finally a thank you to Stephen and Johnny
from Cox McMillan for some great hair!

_The theme of the fashion show_ was how to get back into fashion and
dressing well when you’ve recently (or not so recently) become a Mum and
lost some body confidence and fashion savvy. Katharine, Tina and Laura all
love to help put outfits together – concentrating on what you need, for when
and with whom. Always feel free to let us know your concerns and what you
are looking for and hopefully we can help you find not just the right outfit
but one you can wear and wear and feel great in.

'The Season' is in full swing and our showroom is buzzing.  Over the years
Fahions come and go, customers come and go.   Each season we add more to the
wonderful life stories that we weave together, catching up on business,
family which have nothing at all to so with fashion but everything to do
with relationships which are the lifeblood of any business.
The Job of an Agent has two sides.  One is to represent the Companies and
the second is to form a relationship with the customers.  Companies would
like to think that our alegience to them comes first and in truth we let
them think that because it keeps them happy.  We attend range meeetings
before the start of each season and tell thm their range looks great (even
if privately, occasionaly it looks like a dogs dinner!)  After all it's too
late at that stage for any changes to be made.
Out  main  alegience is always to our customers, those who come to our
showroom Season in and Season out and place orders with us.  They trust us
to tell them when we think certain garments should be bought and trust us
when we tell them that certain others shouldn't.  The customers are our life
blood and it doesn't matter how wonderful the companies are ( and we do our
utmost to look after their business in Ireland)  As on the shop floor 'The
   customer always comes first'.
Next week I will be in London with some of my customers for London Fashion
Week at the Jaeger London Catwalk show which will be great fun in a very
business like way , of course!  So Fashions come and go but hopefully the
retailers will remain and they will continue to do what they do so well.
Buying  great clothes and providing Irish women, who so love style and
fashion, great choice across the many collections on offer.
   Have a great week ahead.....

Entitled  _Future  Imperfect_,  Sinéad’s S/S 2010 collection rejects the
downbeat vision of the future brought to us in the news and, inspired by
retro sci-fi, remembers when the future was something to be excited about.

Tailored  jackets  and shirts play subtly on scale and proportion with
oversized drapes, cropped lengths, wide collars and origami pleating.

In a nod to the season, elegant, cool cottons replace winter wools and
bright silk/ cotton linings insure comfort and breathability.

Slightly fantastical but eminently practical, these are wearable daywear
pieces that command a second look.

The Spring/ Summer Collection will be available in the Loft Market in the
Powerscourt Shopping Centre in Dublin and Selected Stockists Nationwide from
   Mid-February

   _SPOTLIGHT ON... The PR Boutique_

_Introducing The PR Boutique, an exciting new PR agency specialising in the
fashion and beauty sector directed by Aoife Horgan and Cathy Cowan._

Combining their mutual talent for public relations, as well as Aoife’s
background in marketing and Cathy’s former position as Fashion Editor on
Irish Tatler magazine, the talented duo have set about creating a PR company
that strives to provide an effective and personalised service to all its
clients. “We are a small boutique agency with big ability and aim to provide
a real one to one approach with our clients and the media” Aoife enthuses.
“We  also go that one step further, taking time to attend supplier and
distribution meetings with our clients which gives us an extra level of
understanding of their business as well as offering advice on what we think
will be attractive to the media. “

The testing retail climate is very much a part of the overall ethos of The
PR Boutique. “We understand that small independent businesses cannot afford
to be spending large sums of money on PR services but we also know that now,
more than ever, it is important for brands and boutiques to communicate
their strengths to their target audience through a variety of media and
social channels. PR does not have to break the bank!” says Cathy.  “We are
extremely excited about the future of The PR Boutique and we have many ideas
to help grow our business and unique new concepts for our clients to ensure
we remain at the forefront of people’s minds.”

I have had an interest in fashion and beauty for as long as I can remember.
One of my earliest memories is breaking the heel on one of my mother’s boots
while playing dress up and smearing lipstick on the walls! However, my
approach towards it is very different now. I began blogging in March 2009 on
BlogSpot where I put up a couple of pictures of my own style every few of
weeks. In December 2009 I moved to soooali.com. I felt that during those
nine months I started to take fashion more seriously and the move to the
.com site was a natural progression. Weekly I put up posts featuring my own
clothes. This is the kind of fashion that is affordable to me and many
others which means the blog is accessible to anyone. Every now and then I
include an editorial or some product that I love which brings more variety
to the site. It's really just a lot of fun at the end of the day and I hope
   readers are enjoying it too.

We Caught up with Cork Fashion Blogger Cathy Lawson

I  set  up The Style Strutter last August as a way to share my love of
fashion.  I  spend  so long on the internet I decided I may as well do
something useful with it!
I work as a window dresser in Cork so I spend my days styling mannequins and
working on displays and I have an insatiable appetite for fashion magazines!
I love finding new creative people and sharing their talents with my readers
so I try to do a good few interviews. I also do a lot of DIYs on my own
clothes and I also love to share this. For my job I have to keep up to date
with the latest fashion trends and I think this translates to my blog too. I
love the freedom of being able to post whatever interests me and I hope it
inspires others. I also try to give my own opinion and use my own photos
where possible as I think people prefer a blog to have a personal touch.
With Cork rapidly growing in the fashion stakes I try to keep my finger on
the pulse and share whats happening on my blog, such as fashion shows, store
openings, local creatives.

It’s very easy to be weighed down by doom and gloom.  We have only to pick
up the newspapers or turn on the radio for the latest awful news to seep
into  our  consciousness.   Good news just doesn’t make it except as a
‘triumph over adversity’ story.  The Fashion business is by it’s nature
upbeat and is sometimes seen as trivial.  That is something I would argue
very heavily against.  Ok we women do love clothes and the business is
sometimes built around the striving for that idea of ‘want rather than
need.’ The reality is that we need to feel good about ourselves.  To get up
and get ourselves dressed in a way that means we can hold our heads up high
and face the day and whatever it brings. We want and need to feel good about
special  occasions and love when we find that perfect dress or pair of
shoes.  Constantly striving to be better is not something to be in any way
ashamed of.

Our  local  boutiques  and great Irish Independent Fashion Stores do a
fantastic job of presenting to the customers the best of what the world has
to offer.  At the moment buyers are travelling to shows in Paris, London,
Berlin, Denmark and further a field to Australia and America.  They are
picking the best from the ranges and deciding what will look good on their
customers.  Many of the buyers come into my show room; they go through the
ranges and buy for individual customers often remarking that this or that
garment would be perfect for Mrs So and So.  Irish shoppers who support
their local boutiques get tremendous personal service from the owners who go
to enormous trouble to bring interesting and new as well as old faithful
labels onto their rails.

So my message for this week is to enjoy looking at the new collections for
Spring Summer, they are just hitting the shop floors.  Happy shopping…..

_We caught up with Designer Emma Manley to get the inspiration behind her
new Collection_

My  initial  inspiration  was  Bauhaus art. I wanted to zone in on the
simplicity of the big and basic shapes mixed with bold colors. As I began
sketching and sampling for the collection it took a completely different
turn. The Manley aesthetic is quite romantic so for me the challenge was
making something beautiful using tough fabrics, hard shapes and strong
lines.

As things progressed i completely toned down my color palate. I introduced
terribly  feminine  fabrics to balance out the pig skin, essentially I
softened my inspiration and hardened the garments basic structures.

I always begin my design process with the eye catching pieces. This way I
can use these pieces to inspire my basic and simple pieces. At the moment I
am creating a simple separates line to add to my current collection. I want
that all the pieces can be teamed together in a million different ways. I
want people to be able to make their mark on an outfit and not just put on a
‘Manley’ dress with a ‘Manley’ coat and look like their dressed head to toe
in ‘Manley’.

_Emma Manley is an Irish designer based in London.  Since moving from Dublin
to  London  via New York, she has done stints at VPL NYC and Alexander
McQueen. She is now based between Dublin and London, working on her label
‘Manley’._

Attached  is  a link to where you can view the current collection from
Manley. Prices from £50 to £300.
