GOLDEN RULES TO SHINE AT THE RACES
by Delilah Fashion Stylist
Here are some tips to help you stand out and look ultra stylish at this year’s Galway Races.

Comfort: The key to style is by ensuring that the cut and colour of the outfit works for you. There’s no point in picking up a fabulous dress if you’re not 100 per cent comfortable in it. Comfortable reads confidence reads stylish.

Originality: Don’t follow trends religiously; choose only what suits your style. The outfit should also be appropriate to the event. You don’t want to turn up to the Races in cocktail wear or look like you’re heading out to a club. It’s all about reading the mood of the event and dressing accordingly.

Colour: Don’t go for the same colour from head to toe. Try to match different colours together, whether they’re complementary, such as two shades of green or contrasting, such as purple and yellow. If you like neutrals try nude, very 2010 and very complementary to most skin tones. Pale complexions suit richer, neutral tones in cream and blush, while darker skins can carry off very pale pinks and stark nudes. You can also add a touch of colour through accessories.

Accessories: These can make or break an outfit. Less is definitely more. Choose something that will match the outfit. A hat or headpiece is a must on Ladies’ Day. They add a bit of drama and balance the overall look. If wearing a hat, make sure it stays in place. If hats simiply aren’t your thing, then try a fascinator, hair band or flowers. For a touch of elegance, skip the oversize bag and opt for a clutch.

Grooming: All the obvious applies here such as well-groomed hair, and beautifully polished nails. Don’t overdo the make-up; remember, this is a day event. And rule number one should most certainly be to take it easy on the fake tan.

Footwear: There’s nothing worse than seeing a woman struggling to walk in her heels. Wedge heels are comfortable, stylish and add height; the ideal choice for a day at the Races. Keep a pair of flip-flops in your handbag for the long trek back to your car or the bus.

Weather: Don’t forget a chic cover up. The sun may be splitting the rocks but give it a few hours and you’ll be shivering in your heels. There are so many stylish coats or jackets around at the moment to choose from.

Cost: Looking great doesn’t mean you have to splash out. Lots of winners of the Best Dressed Lady competition in recent times have mixed designer with high street, or have simply kept it all high street. It’s all about how you put an outfit together and carry it off.

The Fashion Industry Insider

Last week I was in Milan and this week it has all been on the phone. Making appointments by phone is my absolute pet hates and talking to other agents there seems to be common agreement among us that this is the worst job we have to do. I absolutely love meeting and talking to boutique owners but when I call them I never know what sort of day they are having and can’t make eye contact, which is an obvious disadvantage. Next week I will be on the high ways and byways of Ireland, calling to my customers and seeing what is happening on the ground. With the sales in full swing it’s a busy time for owners. All of us in the Fashion business have one foot in the present and the other firmly in the future. Plans are well advanced for the coming selling season with all the ranges due into the showroom during the month of August and September. Jaeger London, which has been one of the biggest UK success stories, arrives into the showroom on August 3 for 10 days only which means that all the appointments have to run like clockwork. We Irish are not known for our time keeping and each season I become a juggler moving appointments around to make sure all the buyers are accommodated as best I can. Following Jaeger the new Nicowa collection arrives and running alongside these is the large Falke and new ready to wear Yummie Tummie collection. Heidi Higgins Spring Summer 2011 will be in mid September so it feels like I’m in training for a marathon!
I’m taking time out this week end to go to the fantastic milliner Linda McKay who holds hat making work shops in her gorgeous home in Kilkenny. Chloe, my youngest daughter is coming along too and we will be staying in the gorgeous Ballduff House nearby. This is something that will be totally relaxing and creative and while we all run around like headless chickens it is very important to keep in as relaxed frame of mind as we can manage. I will certainly be trying to stay focused and cool and will let you know how I get on.
Have a fashionable week ahead……
