Nicky's Ragtales

Press days demand a huge amount of organisation and the Yummie Tummie one planned for next Tuesday is no exception. Founder Heather Thomson along with her PR and marketing team will be in Dublin for one day. Maximising that day which starts at 5 am with make up and hair and ends at 7 in the evening and includes, TV, Presentations to Press and an In- store customer event has to be organised with military precision. Yummie Tummie is an American company and business is conducted in a very different and highly efficient way. The PR Boutique here in Ireland is working to the highest standards and I’m expecting a really great result from the day.

Working with several different companies means adapting to each of their different methods of conducting business. What are particular to each are the personal friendships and contacts that develop over a working life and often go on even when either the business or the personal has moved on.

One essential rule is to try and conduct business in an ethical and honest fashion. The challenges facing all business today is throwing up some dishonest dealings which is really unfortunate and distasteful. Those in business need to keep in mind the principals of honest trading and face into any difficulties with honesty and courage.

Have a fashionable week ahead………

Vicky Martin Arriving Soon at Camille Boutique

www.camilleboutique.com

The Vicky Martin Label is coming soon to Camille Boutique in Malahide, Dublin!!!

Vicky Martin was founded in 1987 to create eveningwear and sexy daywear for young confident women looking for an alternative to mainstream fashion. Collections are often based on stretch fabrics and appeal to women with personal style who appreciate good design and individuality, and who sometimes enjoy being a little cheeky or girly. Vicky Martin celebrates the joy of dressing up.

The continued success of the label is largely due to applied creativity and attention to detail, but also to our supply and demand strategy. The business is set up to 'listen' and respond to market trends instantly. The label operates their own Manchester based workshop, where all initiation, design and production is in-house, and new styles are created every week. This in-house approach gives the flexibility to execute small runs and original effects, and therefore maintain constant freshness and relative exclusivity. They don't mass-produce, and as a result can have a quick turnaround in fabrics and design.

All garments are individually and carefully made using fabric sourced mainly from Europe and the UK. Fabrics range through soft jerseys and lycras, silk crepes, fluid satins, delicate laces and chiffons, fine knitwear and unusual prints. They devote time to finding different trimmings and use Swarovski crystals for occasional decoration and embellishment.

Fran and Jane Autumn/Winter

Autumn Winter 2010 / 11 marks a strong and confident collection from Fran and Jane. The brands expansion into the UK market is evident in an edgier and more individual collection than ever seen before from the brand, yet still with that same stamp of elegant chic which we know and love the brand for.

Fran and Jane are renowned for the quality of materials used and this year is no exception with materials chosen to deliver maximum impact. From sharp leathers to slouchy knits and opulent embellishment, the key to this season’s collection is undoubtedly attention to detail which demands a closer look.

Outerwear represents the brands nod to the investment piece, with coats and jackets in classic cuts and shapes that will not date if turned out season after season. Key to these pieces is that they that can take shoppers from day to night and are functional and smart while still beautiful to wear.

The femininity of the Fran and Jane brand shines through in dress styles whereby conventional classics are skewed in a mix of understated sexiness and contemporary styling. Always a standout in the brands collection, this seasons array of dresses do not disappoint the dedicated Fran and Jane fan, once again offering girly excitement on some beautiful must have pieces!

AW 2010 / 11 will also mark a huge push into e-tailing by Fran and Jane. Having recently launched a quirky iPhone and iTouch application the brand is set to unveil a revamped online shopping website for the season ahead, promising an improved shopper experience and up to the minute collection drops. This increased bold and confident investment into online screams that the brand wants the international market place to sit up and listen to the this Irish retailer and its stunning new collection.

Founded in 1974 by Fran Nolan, originally a label only company, wholesale – Regine, the family run ‘Mother and Daughter’ brand has gone from strength to strength. The company is very unique as it designs, manufactures, wholesales and retails. Retail started in 2002 in Cork, on this success there are now 12 outlets including 2 concessions called ‘Fran and Jane’. Attention to detail, individuality, quality, price points, style and service are a few words that the company base their business on and the company prides itself on providing customers affordable luxury with an edgy twist. The success to date in the Irish market has given the brand the confidence and ambition to fly the flag for Irish retail in the UK and it is determined to make this expansion a success in the current, extremely challenging retail environment.

Should you need any more information on any of the above please don’t hesitate to contact Elaine Sheahan at elaine@franandjane.ie

Nickys Rag Tales

Being in business is unlike any other way of earning a living and being in business in the world of fashion is unlike being in any other business. I hear about those employed in both the public and the private sector talking about holidays due, overtime, pensions and taking career breaks. These are all alien in my world and in this business there are so many variables and ways of going about it that it’s impossible to quantify or qualify it. If that all sounds a little heavy it’s due to my present view of the world based on a huge workload! Focusing on my business is key to doing my best and ensuring success and for me there is no other option.

This past week we have been showing the most beautiful collection for Spring Summer from young, successful Irish designer Heidi Higgins. A beautifully put together collection that works each piece to the maximum, giving enormous choice to the buyers and in a stunning fresh palette of colour. Buyers have been coming to the showroom every day and we finish next Tuesday when the books will be closed and fabric bought in order to ensure late January delivery in time for the spring season.

At the same time I am working closely with the PR Boutique and the talented and professional Cathy Cowan on the visit of Heather Thomson, founder of Yummie Tummie scheduled for the 26th Of October. A huge task which takes in a TV appearance, events in the Shelbourne Hotel for press and key retailers and a workshop in Brown Thomas. Each minute of the day, which will start with hair and makeup at 5am and end at 6 O’clock in the evening has to be minutely planned.

Oh and I forgot, I have just said goodbye to two key executives from Falke hosiery who have been visiting Ireland and been having meetings with key accounts. Falke is one of the most professional companies I have ever worked for and growth in the accessories area is one of the brightest stars in terms of growth of sales at the moment.

Any boutique that is not buying hosiery, (which is a commodity), a necessary purchase is missing an opportunity to increase turnover with a small outlay.

Have a fashionable week ahead………
